Years later, we return to the topic again, telling you the story of an owner of a 2005 Volvo XC90 with 130,000 kilometers. A few days ago the Poly-V belt broke ( for this type of belt we also dedicated an article in collaboration with Dayco ). When the mechanic arrived at the dealership, the mechanic restarted the engine . It seemed that some fragments of the belt had ended up between the teeth of the distribution. Once the Poly V belt was reassembled, the car was restarted without showing any problems.
Having exceeded ten years of life, the mechanic proposed to replace the entire distribution kit with a water pump . Car collection scheduled for the next day. Below we show you the quote released. A note is clearly visible on it: “We recommend opening the tappet cover to check its integrity” .
mechanic replacing distribution kit with water pump
The next day the customer was called back by the dealership who warned him of the bending of the valves and damage to the tappets during the ignition phase (all this after changing the distribution). In these cases, the repair costs are paid to the car owner.
Inevitably, doubts emerge in the driver’s head. The valves were bent and the tappets damaged . But then how is it possible that the engine, after putting the new service belt, was back in place? The customer, present during the replacement, did not hear any kind of metallic noise coming from the tappets . The car was also moved on the march. As it happens, the damage occurred only after the replacement of the belt .
As often happens, the valves with the tappets are damaged after the installation of the distribution kit. In this specific case, perhaps the engine had not been correctly phased. Or some tensioner roller was left slow.
Now the customer is forced to call an expert to be certified a document with which to obtain a request for a refund at the dealership . All this without excluding an almost inevitable conclusion through legal channels. The fact is that at the moment, with the car stopped in the workshop, the costs have increased dramatically .
